Walking and Praying: Regina Angelorum’s Annual Walkathon brings our entire community together. This is a chance to be united in prayer and in service to the school. .
Our neighbors in Ardmore have become accustomed to seeing Regina Angelorum students and families walk through the community during our Annual Walkathon. When people see us passing, they also notice that we’re doing more than just walking; our walking is a form of prayer, coming together as a community, and enjoying God’s creation.
The Regina Angelorum Academy Walkathon
The Regina Angelorum Academy Annual Walkathon unites the students, faculty, and families. This important fundraiser supports the Regina Angelorum Scholarship Fund. We have an ambitious goal of raising $35,000 this year.
RAA is an independent, private Catholic grade school. As a result, we do not receive subsidies from local parishes or any financial support from the Archdiocese.
The Regina Angelorum Scholarship Fund is an important resource for families who desire an authentically Catholic education for their children This year’s Walkathon is on October 20, 2023.
October and the Rosary
October is the ideal month for our Walkathon. It’s a beautiful time to take in the fall foliage.
October is also dedicated to the Rosary. Regina Angelorum Academy is entrusted to the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary and we honor Mary in a special way by praying the Rosary as a school.
October is dedicated to the Rosary because of the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary is held on October 7th. This feast commemorates the Battle of Lepanto.
The Battle of Lepanto was a significant naval conflict between the Christian Holy League, a coalition of European Catholic maritime states, and the Ottoman Empire. In 1569, the Vatican “urged the Rosary for universal use.” Pope Pius V requested Christians to pray the Rosary in 1571. He asked for their collective prayers to seek the assistance of the Blessed Mother during the Battle of Lepanto.
Muslim military forces were expanding the caliphate. They were on the precipice of dominating the Mediterranean Sea and were threatening to take over Europe.
The Christian Holy League was set to engage the Turkish navy at the Bay of Lepanto. The Christian forces were vastly outnumbered by a superior and highly skilled Turkish armada.
Facing defeat, the Pope called on Christians to pray the Rosary and offer this intention for the Christian naval forces. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and with the aid of prayer, they achieved a decisive victory.
Pope Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, specifically through the praying of the Rosary, and as a result, he instituted the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary to honor this event.
Catholics dedicate October to the Rosary, praying and meditating on Jesus’ life through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Catholics are encouraged to reflect on the mysteries of the Rosary. These mysteries are significant events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The purpose is to deepen their commitment to this form of prayer.
For Catholics, the Rosary is a particularly important sacramental and devotion. At Regina Angelorum Academy, a private, Catholic grade school for students from Pre-K through 8th grade, it is also important for our students’ formation.
